E dopo, gradatamente, il taglio va dentro, nella carne di dentro, e in un voler guardare
più dentro. E torna fuori tra le cose, i prodotti, e compone "still life": grandi immagini

contemporanei.

BIOGRAPHY
1966
Born in Genova where he lives and works.
1984
Art School N. Barabino in Genova.
1989
Graduated at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti in Genova. He starts approaching the professional world of photography and videos.
1986
First photographic works and series in W/B. He begins a research on the body (which is currently carried on with specific equipment) and its chromatics and
visual ambiguities. Beginning of big formats photographic series, such as “TRACCE DI NOTIZIE” (news traces) “VEROSIMIGLIANZE” (verisimilitudes) and
“FOTOGRAFIE” (photographies), putting trueness of appearances in prospective. They are soon included in solo and group shows in Italy. First approaches with
private and public Art Galleries as well as alternatives exibihitions places in Genova and other cities (Sibaria Opendoks-GE o Caffè Voltaire-FI).
1987/88
First solo photo exhibitions in Genova, Roma ,Vercelli, Brescia. Collaboration with Ken Damy in his foreign and Italian galleries, and with Polaroid Italia group
shows in Boston and Europe.
1989/91
He starts experiencing the interest for the elimination of “biodimentionality” of photographic image, towards the improvement of total analysis within space and
opera. The photo is mounted on steel, plexiglas, glass and iron materials, and it eventually placed to a confrontation within common objects, creating in this way
a combined sculpture including in same case also the video support. Projects and installations like “NEOGRIGIO” or “INTERAZIONI – TOTEM” are being utilised
in cooperation with other artists, critics like: E.Cirone; V.Conti; S.Ricaldone; F.Rosso and E.Marasco will start writing about him.
The first solo shows are including “ PORZIONI MODULARI” by V.Fagone; M.Vescovo; J.Gerighausen dalla galleria Leonardi V-IDEA in Genova.
Work group formation: ARTE COME EVOCAZIONE, together with Costa and Cristaldi (as well as A.Spalluto, G.Norese, L.Agostini, C.Cantono) that will be
generating in the next years five illustrated catalogues on the events and eight multimedia productions in Italian spaces where art is not normally hosted (like
factories, typographies, paper factories, madhouses and private galleries), also in cooperation with other artists like Getulio Alviani and Franco Vaccari.
1992/93
Co-founder of a second group “ACE”, formed in Torino in 1992 (and disappered in 1997/98), concerning all the “social” aspects associated with Art, and its
information system; an artistic group activity parallel to the individual one, with the aim of expanding the artistic system all over the country. It has developed
projects in cooperation with artists, professionals and institutions (Salone del Libro in Torino, Amnesty International, Regione Piemonte. Castello di Rivara, Rivara
(TO) 1994. Viafarini, Milano 1993. Regione Piemonte, Torino 1994. Car TV, Zurich 1994. Festival Cinema Giovani, Torino 1994. Care of, Cusano Milanino (MI)
1995. Messe 2ok, Koln 1995. Arte Video TV, Rassegna video, Palazzo Sanguinetti, Bologna (by A.Borgogelli, M.Giusti e S.Grandi) (itinerant exhibition: Museo © FRANCESCO ARENA - http://www.francescoarena.it www.myspace.com/francescoarena mailto: francesco.arena@libero.it - mobile: +39 3402540631

Revoltella, Trieste; Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Paris; Video Vision 95, Galerie im Rathaus, Munchen; Fuori Orario e Blobcartoon, RAITRE). Group exhibitions in
Milano, Sacro Monte di Varallo, Genova, Roma; solo shows in Milano, Roma, Torino by M.Senaldi; E.Missiroli; P.Diecidue; G.Toderi; M.Dall?Olio; and I.Mulatero.
His work his presented at “SPLENDENTE”, the last appointment of the annual series held at Castello di Volpaia, curated by Luciano Pistoi. The job of the artist is
now settled on line with a search for “ ambiguity of languages”, intending the feeling and objects? ones which surround us. Search that is clearly shown in
projects like ”OLTRE“ “ATTRAVERSO”, "BERSAGLI”. Reviews on numerous art and photos magazines such as ZOOM, Photo, Juliet, Flash Art.
1994/95
The artist is carrying over his collaboration within the ACE projects with : “STORY”, “TANDEM”, “SOUVENIR”, “MARKET”, ”EUROPE”, in Torino, Grangesis,
Colonia and Monaco.
He starts cooperating with Italian and foreign artistic groups with similar conception of art, such as MALA ARTI VISIVE, VEGETALI IGNOTI, MUSEO TEO, NAME
DIFFUSION. “ARS LUX” by S. Grandi, invitation by M. Senaldi; “EQUINOZIO D?AUTUNNO2” at Castello di Rivara, by Franz Paludetto, “FAX ART”, by L. Pratesi,
“ARTE VIDEO TV”, broadcasted by RAI 3; “LOOK TO THE SEA”, by C. Benini and Neon Gallery in Bologna, “MESSE 2 OK “ in Colonia and “ZUCKER” in Monaco.
Solo shows in Bologna (53), Genova (Alterità), Torino (Sculture all?Aperto 95).
He also organises exhibitions like: “PER PRESA VISIONE”; “MUSEO TEO A GENOVA”; “CITTA? AD ARTE”, featuring debates and discussions about art and its
relations with the city where, for the first time in his projects, also external artists are invited. These will be presented in several catalogues like “NUOVA
SCENA”, edited by Mondadori, indicated by G. Perrella and L. Beatrice.
1996
The cooperation with foreign groups goes on, thanks to “COMPARTMENT” in Copenaghen, where new projects will follow. Group shows in Trieste, Roma,
Genova, Varese, Milano. Starting of a new project on Internet focused on information and creation of related exhibitions and events. He is completing important
projects such as “AUTOBIOGRAFICA”, “IN PERFETTA SOLITUDINE”, anticipating his interest towards social communication and interpersonal relations. The
interest on the body and its contents returns, after a prior analysis about its “superficial” characteristics.
1997
In “ STILL LIFE FOR LIFELIKE PEOPLE ”- a new photographic project of huge dimension, there is a clear reminding of advertising images, both for their
technical structure and language : a new language directly reaching the power of a thought and a feeling around the intellectual artistic codes. These works are
featured in group exhibitions like: “SEX” ,Galleria Banchi Nuovi in Roma;” BLUE”,Spazio libero per l?arte, c/o Cineplex Porto Antico in Genova;
“ATLANTE”,Geografia e storia della giovane arte italiana in Sassari; “QUOTIDIANA- sulll?oggetto”, Civica Galleria d?Arte in Padova. He continues his video
research presented in national and international exhibitions: “ ALPE ADRIA CINEMA”, IX edition in Trieste; “ E? una modesta proposta” AA.VV., Rassegna Video
Arte in Rovereto; “NORD- SUD” (by IEDVIF video) in Chiasso; “EXPERIMENTAL”, Video Festival in Zurigo. And he begins his first performances shows in
exhibitions like: “GAME” at the Modern Art Gallery in Bologna in 98 and “CROSSOVER “at theatre Chiasso in 99.
2000/2004
He begins a new photographic series like the vintage images of "EMERGENCY OF BEAUTY" (Polaroid image system, cm.9x7), a Polaroid series on big size
grouping and comparing between them different body details (like mouths, eye, hands...) which, isolated and observed in their particulars, are recalling the
hard pornographic iconography.
Moreover he starts a new videos series: "LUOGHI DI TEMPO", with a fulll abandonment of the screenplay and of "the story", towards a recovery of the live shot.
Long sequences never turned over. With this concept, he also starts a work-in-progress video series called "L.D.T.-RESPIRI" where some girls, breathing for
about 45 mn. in front of a transparent glass, are denouncing more hidden emotivities, needs, perplexities.
He takes part at several shows like: "VIA CRUCIS 2000", Museo di S.Agostino in Genova; "GLOBE LA TORRE DI BABELE" ,Museo d'Ar te Contemporanea in
Genova and " ITALIAN CONNECTION" in Berna, Switzerland.
He has asked by the museum of Villa Croce in Genoa to take part to “GLOBE” in 2001 and “DALLO SCIROCCO AL FOHN” in 2002, where he features
photographic installations and big wall video projections.
Between 2002 and 2003 his artworks are exhibited in "Artissima" and other festivals and international video exhibiitions. He starts collaborations with famous
musicians and directors like Andrea Liberovici (contributing with images to "Integral", musical piece ordered by Atelier de Creation Radiophonique de France
Culture and by INA-GRM).
In 2004 a new big multimedia project is starting: "CIRCULAR BODIES", a video, a new photographic series and installations, and the "ANATOMY OF
MELANCHOLY" event/performance presented at Villa Croce Contemporary Art Museum in Genoa, Italy, in collaboration with the american musician and
videomaker WILLIAM BASINSKI. Same project will be then featured at Arcadia, the New York residence of the Music and Media Laboratories of Basinski.
2005/2006
Arena M-eats Corpicrudi (AMC) is a concept born from a collaboration between FRANCESCO ARENA and CORPICRUDI, genoese team working on hybrid videoperformance/photo-installation and music projects. The project includes 4 serial episodes featured in the various rooms of the “Samantha Stella?s house”, with a
totally new and free use of supports from the visual, performative and sound languages. A different episode for each room of this ideal house with fixed and
mobile video cameras from the reality shows? format. A series of live performances featured in video images, or born from the interaction between the two
languages. Each location becomes an installation where a few design elements are playing a particular aestethic balance contributing to the whole project style.
The CORPICRUDI team are proposing their bodies as objects, while FRANCESCO ARENA is interpreting them as subjects. Bodies, images, colours, all is
contributing to the visual and emotional feeling of each room where Samantha Stella is living alone or with her friends. Multiple video and photo images are
giving different suggestions, feelings, cuttings to the spectators. Electro music as the only verbal language thanks to the collaboration with MASS_PROD, sound
designer for corpicrudi. The four episodes Bathroom, Bedroom, Sitting Room and Dining room have been exhibited at :

2007/08
While presenting his new solo exhibitions, he continues his personal photographic/video research with the new work-in-progress series "The Motel Room -
Female", a still unpublished photographic/lightbox installation, and the conclusion of the "Respiri / Breaths" video series.
"Respiri / Breaths" is a concept born from his homonym video series started in 2004. This series belongs to the work-in-progress "Luoghi di Tempo"
production focused on the obsession related to communication between people and their deeper emotions.
Between 2004 and 2008 Francesco Arena realized 23 videos featuring 23 different male and female protagonists with the aim of giving expression to the bicoloured obsessions of their faces breathing behind a glass and often reaching intimate "forced" but touching emotions.
The following 23 international musicians working with different sounds created a specific sound design for each video : ACT NOIR – Italy; ADRIANO CANZIAN –
Italy; ANDREA CHIMENTI – Italy; ASHLEY – France; CATO (ECCOTONIC) – Usa; CIRQULAR – Japan; CONIGLIO VIOLA – Italy; ELIO MARTUSCIELLO -
ItalyGIANLUCA BECUZZI (KINETIX) – Italy; HUMAN ERROR – Poland; JAPANESE GUM – Italy; JUDITH JUILLERAT – France ; MARIA CASTRO – France; MORE –
Poland; MOUNT SIMS – Usa; NEONGRAU – Germany; OPISANT/JOHN BELPAESE – Italy; ORY CHALK – Belgium; PENELOPEX (MARTA ZAPPAROLI) - Italy /
Germany; PIETER NOOTEN – Holland; SERGIO WOW ! – Italy; SPIN BOLDAK – Italy; STEREOBOY – Portugal.
From the electro-dark featured by MOUNT SIMS (Usa) to the experimental/electronic sound by GIANLUCA BECUZZI (KINETIX, Italy), from the elegant
multimedia compositions presented all over the world by ELIO MARTUSCIELLO (Italy), to the post romantic melody by ANDREA CHIMENTI (Italy), famous for his
past collaboration with David Sylvian.
And even more. From the techno-sex sound by the famous International Gigolo dj ADRIANO CANZIAN (Italy), through the very original ambient sound by
MARIA CASTRO (France), a reworking with spoken test of an Italian pièce of the 17th century, to the zen athmosphere by CIRQULAR (Japan). From the
vibrant contemporary sound offered by PIETER NOOTEN (Netherlands), artist from the famous 4AD, to the sharp and tough notes by MORE (Poland), young
composer at his first lucky official releases.
According to its multimedia spirit, the "Respiri / Breaths" project will be presented in the 2008/09 season as a site-specific event in different locations and
situations, including contemporary art galleries, theatres, video festivals and music shows. A base structure will be adapted for each event becoming a unique
feature. Each representation will have a critic text.
This project strengthens the spirit of collaboration and contamination between Arena photographic work and the other media (in the past he used to relate with
objects to fit his installations, while music and video are featured in his last productions). Sound designs and video installations are the key elements
accompanying his photographic research in every new venue
